As seneschal to High King Cardan, Jude must fight to keep control of the Faerie throne while her younger brother, Oak, enjoys the childhood she never knew.
The Cruel Prince is about wanting power. The Wicked King is about the burden of keeping it, and that's the better idea in the pair. The Book Smugglers called it intricate and twisty, with power as the central theme, and that's a fair summary.
The cost is patience. The court talk takes its time before the betrayals start paying dividends, and then the book ends on cliffhangers that lead straight into The Queen of Nothing. Jude also gets outmaneuvered more than some readers like, and whether that's a flaw or the realistic strain of the job is a live argument. The romance is the other one. Some find the leads electric, others can't forget how book one began. Pick this up if court intrigue is your thing, not school-style cruelty.
The twists are sharp, the power games knotty, and the second half is where the book bites. Readers split on whether it tops The Cruel Prince, and on whether Jude's slide from canny operator to frequently outmaneuvered heroine is realistic or frustrating. It won the 2019 Goodreads Choice Award for Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction, a reader-voted prize.
