The Twentieth Wife,

A meticulously researched historical epic, The Twentieth Wife brings to life one of the Mughal Empire’s most formidable figures: Mehrunnisa, who would later be known as Empress Nur Jahan.

A Rise from the Dust

The novel begins with the desperate birth of Mehrunnisa to Persian refugees on the edge of the desert. Through sheer brilliance and an iron will, she navigates the complex, often dangerous world of the royal harem. Sundaresan subverts colonial stereotypes of the "hidden woman," portraying the harem not just as a place of luxury, but as a center of profound political maneuvering and intellectual life.

The Power of Determination

At its heart, this is a story of a woman who refused to be a footnote in history. It tracks her transition from an abandoned child to a widow, and finally to the beloved twentieth wife of Emperor Jahangir. Their legendary romance is presented as a partnership of equals, where Mehrunnisa’s influence shaped the cultural and political landscape of 17th-century India.

Historical Resonance

Each chapter is anchored by quotes from historical documents, blending authentic detail with a vibrant narrative. It is an immersive portrait of the Mughal court—a world of opulent beauty, lethal ambition, and the enduring power of a single woman’s ambition.
