The Sword of Shannara,

When epic fantasy expanded into mainstream publishing during the late twentieth century, The Sword of Shannara broke new ground in 1977 by becoming the first fiction book to reach the New York Times trade paperback bestseller list, where it remained for more than five months. American author Terence Dean Brooks, known professionally as Terry Brooks, established himself as a central figure in commercial fantasy literature through this breakthrough debut.

Born on January 8, 1944, Brooks went on to publish dozens of bestselling fantasy novels that helped build enduring audience interest in multi-volume secondary-world sagas.

Career & Background

Raised in Sterling, Illinois, Brooks began writing fiction during high school and later attended Hamilton College before pursuing a law degree. He practiced as an attorney for several years while drafting his initial manuscripts. After the massive commercial success of The Sword of Shannara in 1977 and the release of two subsequent novels, he left his legal career to write full-time. Throughout his career, he generated 23 New York Times bestsellers and accumulated over 21 million copies of his books in print worldwide. In addition to his original epic fantasy and contemporary fantasy sagas, he was selected by George Lucas to write the film novelization for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, completing two movie novelizations overall. In recognition of his long career, Brooks received the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement before announcing his semi-retirement in March 2025.

Writing Style & Themes

Brooks is widely recognized for weaving traditional high-fantasy motifs, detailed mythologies, and heroic quests with clear, accessible prose. His works frequently examine how ordinary individuals rise to meet overwhelming darkness, balancing grand epic scales with personal coming-of-age character arcs. Across his sprawling sagas, such as the Shannara series, the Magic Kingdom of Landover books, and urban fantasies like Running with the Demon, he continuously rejuvenates his secondary worlds across generational timelines, passing heroic burdens from parents to children.
