Born Mary Robinette Harrison on February 8, 1969, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Kowal studied Art Education with a minor in Theater and Speech at East Carolina University. In 1991, she accepted an internship at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia, beginning a long career as a professional puppeteer. She performed for Jim Henson Productions, spent a year and a half in Iceland working on the children's television show LazyTown, and operated her own company, Other Hand Productions.
