At thirty-six, Quoyle, a third-rate newspaperman, is wrenched violently out of his workaday life when his two-timing wife meets her just deserts. He retreats with his two daughters to his ancestral home on the starkly beautiful Newfoundland coast, where a rich cast of local characters all play a part in Quoyle's struggle to reclaim his life. As three generations of his family cobble up new lives, Quoyle confronts his private demons--and the unpredictable forces of nature and society--and begins to see the possibility of love without pain or misery.
A vigorous, darkly comic, and at times magical portrait of the contemporary American family, The Shipping News shows why E. Annie Proulx is recognized as one of the most gifted and original writers in America today.

Explorations of rural North American life, regional landscapes, and declining working communities form the core of a distinctive body of fiction that includes award-winning novels and short stories. American author Annie Proulx achieved widespread recognition with her second novel, The Shipping News, which earned both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award. Her narratives frequently portray isolated individuals, harsh environments, and unconventional family dynamics struggling against economic and environmental forces.
Born Edna Annie Proulx on August 22, 1935, in Norwich, Connecticut, she spent more than thirty years living in Vermont before later residing in Wyoming and spending time in Newfoundland. She attended Colby College, earned a bachelor's degree cum laude from the University of Vermont in 1969, and completed a master's degree at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia University) in 1973, continuing doctoral studies until 1975. Prior to establishing her career as a novelist, she worked as a journalist and published practical non-fiction books on topics ranging from cider making to building fences.
Proulx published her debut short-story collection, Heart Songs, in 1988 while in her fifties. She followed it with her first novel, Postcards, in 1992, which received the 1993 PEN/Faulkner Award. Her next novel, The Shipping News (1993), won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Irish Times International Fiction Prize. Over her career, she has authored eleven books, including major novels such as Accordion Crimes and Barkskins, as well as story collections like Close Range, which included her story 'Brokeback Mountain' that was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning feature film.
Proulx's prose style is defined by extensive field research, wide travel, and a keen ear for regional speech patterns and specialized vocabularies. Her fiction pairs vivid descriptions of harsh geographies with surprising, scathing language and dark comedy. She structures her narratives around unexpected plot developments, examining human stubbornness alongside the bleak realities of social and environmental change.
A primary thematic focus across her fiction is the dissolution of traditional rural North American livelihoods. Her characters—ranging from farmers, loggers, and ranchers to immigrant laborers—remain attached to the land even as shifting economic forces and personal choices disrupt their communities. Through these narratives, she explores the complex cultural heritage and tragicomic realities of isolated regional life.
