It's 1963, and riots and sabotage plague the space program. The climate change caused by the Meteor is becoming more and more clear, but tensions are rising, and the IAC's goal of getting humanity off Earth is threatened. Blending meticulous historical detail with speculative technology, the Lady Astronaut alternate history series reimagines the mid-twentieth-century space race following a cataclysmic meteorite impact on Earth. USA Today bestselling author Mary Robinette Kowal established herself as a prominent figure in science fiction and fantasy through this saga, beginning with The Calculating Stars. Her body of work spans historical fantasy, locked-room mysteries in space, acclaimed short fiction collections, and children's literature such as Molly on the Moon.

Career & Background

Born Mary Robinette Harrison on February 8, 1969, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Kowal studied Art Education with a minor in Theater and Speech at East Carolina University. In 1991, she accepted an internship at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia, beginning a long career as a professional puppeteer. She performed for Jim Henson Productions, spent a year and a half in Iceland working on the children's television show LazyTown, and operated her own company, Other Hand Productions. Kowal began publishing speculative fiction in the mid-2000s, earning the Astounding Award for Best New Writer along with four Hugo Awards, the Nebula Award, the Locus Award, and an RT Reviews Award for Best Fantasy Novel. She served as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) from 2019 to 2021, co-hosts the award-winning podcast Writing Excuses, and works as a SAG/AFTRA voice actor and audiobook narrator, recording works for authors including Seanan McGuire, Cory Doctorow, and Neal Stephenson. She lives in Denver with her husband Robert, their dog Guppy, and their cat Elsie.

Writing Style & Themes

Kowal's writing combines technical research with character-driven narrative structure and social commentary. Her extensive background in theater and puppetry informs her precise dialogue and scenic staging, while her plots frequently examine systemic inequality, grief, competence under crisis, and institutional response to disaster. Whether blending Regency manners with magic in The Glamourist Histories, exploring World War I intelligence work via spirit mediums in Ghost Talkers, or crafting locked-room mysteries aboard space vessels in The Spare Man, her work emphasizes emotional realism and attention to historical accuracy. Her short stories have appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction, Uncanny Magazine, Strange Horizons, and multiple Year's Best anthologies, as well as her collections Word Puppets and Scenting the Dark and Other Stories.
