The Prince of Mist,

Set in a dark, gothic version of mid-twentieth-century Barcelona, the atmospheric novel sequence The Cemetery of Forgotten Books brought mystery, bibliophilia, and historical intrigue to millions of readers around the world. Spanish novelist Carlos Ruiz Zafón gained international acclaim with his 2001 novel, The Shadow of the Wind, which was translated into more than forty languages and sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

Career & Background

Born in Barcelona on September 25, 1964, Carlos Ruiz Zafón began his writing career in young adult fiction before producing bestselling gothic literature for adults. His early literary works include The Prince of Mist, which established his focus on seaside mysteries, supernatural suspense, and eerie historical settings.

Dividing his time between his hometown of Barcelona and Los Angeles, California, where he worked and kept a personal workspace in Beverly Hills, he authored eight novels in total. His adult quartet, The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, expanded upon The Shadow of the Wind with subsequent installments including The Angel's Game, The Prisoner of Heaven, and The Labyrinth of the Spirits. He died in Los Angeles on June 19, 2020, at the age of 55.

Writing Style & Themes

A hallmark of Zafón's work is its immersive depiction of post-war Barcelona, filled with hidden libraries, shadowy alleyways, secret societies, and forgotten texts. Beyond his narrative themes, the author harbored a deep lifelong fascination with dragons, inspired by the dragon motifs that adorn the architecture of Barcelona.

Born in the Year of the Dragon, Zafón viewed himself as a nocturnal, dark-seeking creature who was not particularly sociable or fond of traditional knights-errant. He assembled a personal collection of over 400 dragon figurines in his home and workspace, which he affectionately referred to as his dragonera or dragon's cave.
