Hard-boiled detective fiction gained its unsentimental edge and realistic urban backdrop through gritty crime stories featuring private eyes like Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon. Samuel Dashiell Hammett drew directly from his real-world experiences as an operative for the Pinkerton Detective Agency to replace traditional parlor mysteries with cynical investigators, street-level slang, and morally ambiguous underworlds.
Across five novels and dozens of short stories published in pulp magazines like Black Mask, Hammett established influential conventions for American crime fiction, crafting sharp dialogue and detective pairings such as Nick and Nora Charles in The Thin Man.
Born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, on May 27, 1894, to Richard Hammett and Mary Bond, Hammett left Baltimore Polytechnic Institute at age thirteen to work a series of jobs as a clerk, stevedore, and advertising manager. He joined the Baltimore branch of the Pinkerton Detective Agency in 1915, gaining firsthand knowledge of investigation work. During World War I, he enlisted in the United States Army Motor Ambulance Corps in June 1918. While serving, he contracted influenza that developed into chronic tuberculosis, leading to his discharge in July 1919. After further treatment at a veterans hospital near Tacoma, Washington, he married Josephine Annas Dolan in 1920, with whom he had two daughters before their divorce in 1937.
Hammett launched a full-time writing career in 1922, publishing short stories and novelettes in Black Mask magazine. He created the Continental Op before releasing his debut novel, Red Harvest, followed by The Dain Curse, The Maltese Falcon, The Glass Key, and The Thin Man. He also worked as a book reviewer for the Saturday Review of Literature from 1927 to 1929, wrote screenplays in Hollywood, and authored the comic strip Secret Agent X-9. Re-enlisting during World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the Aleutian Islands from 1942 to 1945. Later involved in left-wing political activism, Hammett was imprisoned in 1951 during political hearings. He died in Manhattan, New York City, on January 10, 1961, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Hammett transformed the mystery genre by replacing artificial puzzle-box plots with tough, unsentimental realism and concise dialogue. Drawing on his operative experience with Pinkerton, he set his stories in corrupt urban landscapes where world-weary detectives maneuvered through organized crime, political dishonesty, and economic greed. His objective narrative perspective relied on external actions and lean prose rather than internal monologues, establishing a stark atmospheric tone that heavily shaped American detective fiction and cinematic film noir adaptations.
