Practical advice on home organization and personal decluttering reached a broad global audience through the international success of The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Japanese organizing consultant and author Marie Kondo developed a distinct method centered on evaluating household items by whether they spark joy and organizing the remaining possessions by category rather than room. Her work transformed domestic organization into an influential movement, providing readers with actionable steps to turn cluttered environments into calm, functional spaces.
Born in Japan in 1984, Kondo cultivated a serious interest in home management during her childhood. At age fifteen, inspired by a popular Japanese book on decluttering, she began systematically studying organizational practices while volunteering as a Shinto shrine maiden. She later attended university in Tokyo to study sociology, writing her graduation thesis on apartment decluttering from a sociological perspective. At age nineteen, while still a student, she established her professional tidying consultancy.
In 2011, Kondo published her landmark book in Japan, which was later released in the United States in 2014 as The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. The book became an international bestseller published in more than thirty countries. Building on this success, she founded KonMari Media, Inc., published the 2015 companion guide Spark Joy, and starred in the hit Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, bringing her decluttering philosophy to television viewers worldwide.
Kondo's writing style blends step-by-step instructional advice with thoughtful reflections on the emotional relationship people maintain with their physical possessions. A central theme of her KonMari Method is mindfulness, urging readers to examine items individually, retain only those that serve a clear purpose or bring happiness, and express gratitude toward discarded items. Her works emphasize completing decluttering as a singular, thorough event to achieve lasting order and clarity.
