§About the Author

Drew Magary

1 books in catalog

Combining surreal speculative fiction with sharp observational humor, modern storytelling often blurs the line between existential fantasy and satirical social commentary. Author Drew Magary established a distinct presence in speculative fiction with narratives such as The Hike, a dark and inventive journey through an otherworldly landscape filled with surreal obstacles and unexpected humor.

In addition to his novels, Magary is a widely read columnist and memoirist whose work spans digital media, sports commentary, and personal narratives. His books bridge high-concept premises with candid human vulnerability, offering readers engaging explorations of morality, survival, and identity.

Career & Background

Born Andrew Schuyler Magary on October 7, 1976, in Wahroonga, New South Wales, Australia, Drew Magary built a multi-faceted career in American journalism, digital media, and book publishing. He attended Colby College and gained prominent visibility as a long-time columnist for Deadspin and a correspondent for GQ. Over his career, his writing has appeared across a broad range of major publications, including Maxim, New York, The Atlantic, Bon Appétit, Gawker, Rolling Stone, and SFGATE.

In September 2020, following a mass staff resignation from Deadspin, Magary co-founded Defector Media alongside his former colleagues, helping establish the employee-owned sports and culture website. Alongside his active journalism career, he expanded into book-length publishing, writing acclaimed novels and personal memoirs while residing in Maryland with his family.

Writing Style & Themes

Magary's writing style is defined by a blend of satirical wit, brisk narrative momentum, and imaginative high-concept premises. Whether portraying dystopian futures or surreal fantasy realms, his stories ground fantastical circumstances in authentic human emotional responses, candid inner monologues, and sharp dialogue. Recurring themes across his fiction include mortality, aging, technological shifts, and individual resilience.

His non-fiction and memoirs feature the same frank, conversational, and irreverent voice present in his column work. After surviving a severe traumatic brain injury that left him with permanent hearing loss, Magary documented his medical emergency and recovery process with unsparing detail. Across both fiction and essay forms, his work explores how individuals adapt to sudden physical disruption and life-altering challenges.
