In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. Under the tutelage of the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world and struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. Gradually Jonas learns just how costly this ordered and pain-free society can be, and boldly decides he cannot pay the price.

Dystopian young adult fiction and children's literature were deeply reshaped by speculative and historical novels that explore memory, societal control, and human grief. Lois Lowry established herself as one of the most versatile voices in youth literature through her award-winning novel The Giver, which introduced young readers to a controlled society lacking pain, color, and choice. Her expansive body of work ranges from poignant dramas to humorous middle-grade fiction, earning her widespread recognition including two Newbery Medals.
Born Lois Ann Hammersberg on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawaii, she grew up as the middle child between her gentle older sister, Helen, and her younger brother, Jon, who shared their father's passion for electric trains and car engines. Her father was an Army dentist and career military officer whose assignments required frequent relocations. She began school in New York, completed elementary school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, while her father served overseas during World War II, attended seventh and eighth grades in Tokyo, Japan, and graduated high school in New York City before entering Brown University. At age nineteen, after her sophomore year, she married a Naval officer and continued relocating across California, Connecticut, Florida, South Carolina, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Maine while raising four young children under the age of five.
After her husband entered Harvard Law School and the family settled in Maine, she resumed her education at the University of Southern Maine, earned her degree, attended graduate school, and began writing professionally. Drawing on childhood memories of writing stories in notebooks and her experience with personal tragedy, including the loss of her sister Helen, she published her debut novel A Summer to Die in 1977.
Throughout her career, Lois Lowry has addressed complex and challenging topics for young readers, including terminal illness, racism, total censorship, war, and the Holocaust. Despite spanning disparate genres—from the humorous Anastasia Krupnik middle-grade series to dystopian fiction—her books consistently emphasize the fundamental necessity of human connections. Her writing balances clear, accessible prose with deep thematic questions about individuality, collective memory, and personal ethics.
