§About the Author

John Fowles

5 books in catalog

Psychological tension, philosophical inquiry, and narrative experimentation define the celebrated fiction of twentieth-century British literature, most famously embodied in the haunting psychological thriller The Collector. English novelist John Fowles emerged as a major literary figure whose works challenged traditional storytelling conventions while engaging an international readership.

Career & Background

Born on March 31, 1926, in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, John Robert Fowles attended Bedford School from 1940 to 1944 before serving nearly two years in the Royal Marines. He later studied French at New College, Oxford, graduating with honors in 1950. Fowles began his career teaching English at the University of Poitiers in France, followed by a transformative teaching post on the Greek island of Spetses, where he met his future wife, Elizabeth Whitton. His experience in Greece inspired much of his early fiction, leading to the dramatic success of his debut novel, The Collector, in 1963. The commercial success of his early books enabled Fowles to retire from teaching and settle in Lyme Regis, Dorset, where he devoted himself full-time to writing novels, personal essays, and natural history studies until his death on November 5, 2005.

Writing Style & Themes

Positioned critically between modernism and postmodernism, Fowles drew profound intellectual influence from French existential philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. His novels frequently blend detailed psychological probings of love, isolation, and sexual obsession with self-reflexive narrative structures that question the nature of fiction itself. Beyond his fiction, Fowles maintained a passionate, lifelong commitment to natural history and environmental contemplation, exploring humanity's relationship with wild nature in reflective non-fiction works.

Major Works

  • The Collector — Published in 1963 and adapted into a 1965 film, this debut thriller examines obsession, social class, and captivity through the perspective of a quiet clerk who kidnaps an art student.
  • The Magus — Drawing heavily on Fowles's teaching years on the Greek island of Spetses, this complex novel explores psychological manipulation, illusion, and existential self-discovery on a remote Mediterranean island.
  • The French Lieutenant's Woman — Set in Victorian Lyme Regis, this acclaimed 1969 historical novel combines mid-nineteenth-century romantic drama with a modernist, meta-fictional narrator and multiple alternative endings.
  • The Tree — This 1979 reflective essay offers an intimate, philosophical examination of nature, art, and the unquantifiable beauty of untamed wilderness.
  • A Maggot — Published in 1985, this inventive eighteenth-century historical mystery combines court depositions, religious mysticism, and speculative narrative techniques.
