§Synopsis

01

In his classic book The Four Loves, Lewis describes the four basic kinds of human love-affection, friendship, erotic love, and the love of God. Since this is the only commercial recording of C. S. Lewis that is available today, fans of his writing will desire to add this impressive recording to their collection. While Lewis's writings have impacted more evangelical Christians than perhaps any other writer, this audio product of the author's reading of this classic book will undoubtedly expand the theological understanding of the nature of love to a much wider audience. He explores the love between parents and children, the love of friends, the love of men and women for each other, and the love of God that may enrich all love. He also goes in-depth into questions of sex, possessiveness, jealousy, pride, false sentimentality, manners in loving, and the need for more laughter between lovers. Lewis's wise and candid reflections on the virtues and dangers of love draw on sources from Jane Austen to Saint Augustine. This recording features a new audio introduction and commentary by Chuck Colson. The CD will also include a study guide--perfect for individual or group use. - Publisher.

Fantasy literature and Christian apologetics were profoundly shaped by a seven-volume portal fantasy series that introduced generations of readers to the magical land of Narnia. Clive Staples Lewis, widely known as C. S. Lewis, created enduring fictional universes alongside rigorous philosophical defenses of the Christian faith, establishing himself as a prolific twentieth-century author, academic, and scholar.

Career & Background

Born in Belfast, Ireland, on November 29, 1898, C. S. Lewis served in France during World War I before establishing a distinguished academic career at Oxford and Cambridge. He worked as an Irish-born British novelist, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, and Christian apologist. Lewis served as a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Magdalen College, Oxford from 1925 until 1954, when he was unanimously appointed to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He maintained deep intellectual friendships, notably with his brother Warren and fellow Oxford scholars, while writing dozens of influential works across literary history, theology, and fiction until his death on November 22, 1963.

Writing Style & Themes

Lewis blended scholarly medieval expertise with accessible narrative craft, weaving Christian allegory, myth, philosophy, and satire into his imaginative writing. His theological and philosophical non-fiction works broke complex moral arguments into clear, conversational prose originally developed through popular wartime radio broadcasts. In his fiction, he explored moral responsibility, spiritual longing, divine love, and human redemption through fantastical frameworks ranging from portal fantasy to planetary science fiction.

Major Works

  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe — Published in 1950, this foundational fantasy novel introduces four siblings who enter the magical realm of Narnia through a wardrobe, joining the noble lion Aslan to fight the White Witch.
  • Out of the Silent Planet — The opening novel of Lewis's Space Trilogy blends planetary science fiction and theological allegory as philologist Elwin Ransom is journeyed to Malacandra.
  • The Voyage of the Dawn Treader — This third published Narnia adventure follows Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace aboard a royal vessel sailing across uncharted seas toward the edge of the world.
  • The Four Loves — This insightful non-fiction work examines human affection, friendship, eros, and charity through the lens of Christian theology and philosophy.
  • The Complete Chronicles of Narnia — This canonical collection gathers all seven stories set in Narnia, recording the entire arc and mythology of the enchanted world.
