§Synopsis

01

"In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story. Soon, though, the men find themselves drawn into a tale as deep and old as the Reservoir. It's a tale of dark pacts, of long-buried secrets, and of a mysterious figure known as Der Fisher: the Fisherman. It will bring Abe and Dan face to face with all that they have lost, and with the price they must pay to regain it."--Publisher.

Contemporary horror and weird fiction gained one of its most distinct voices through cosmic tales that blend literary depth with dread, most notably in the Bram Stoker Award-winning novel The Fisherman. American author John Langan has built an extensive catalog of dark fiction that examines grief, mythology, and human vulnerability when confronted with ancient, inexplicable forces. His work ranges from dark fantasy short stories featured in contemporary horror collections such as New Cthulhu: The Recent Weird to sprawling novels and critically acclaimed collections.

Career & Background

Born on July 6, 1969, in Poughkeepsie, New York, John Paul Langan pursued creative writing and literature in higher education, earning his MFA and studying at the State University of New York at New Paltz and the CUNY Graduate Center. Alongside his writing career as a novelist, short story writer, and reviewer for Locus magazine, Langan has worked as a professor in the Mid-Hudson Valley region of New York. Beyond his personal publications, he has served as a key advocate for horror literature, helping co-found the Shirley Jackson Awards—where he served as an initial juror for three years and later joined its board of directors—and co-editing the dark fiction anthology Creatures: Thirty Years of Monsters with Paul Tremblay.

Writing Style & Themes

Langan's fiction frequently draws on metafictional framing, folklore, Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and classical myth to explore themes of loss, guilt, addiction, and betrayal. His narratives often feature embedded storytelling, where characters recount past encounters with terrifying forces, grounding uncanny supernatural elements within complex familial and personal relationships. By combining academic literary structure with traditional atmospheric dread, his writing crafts lingering psychological tension alongside vivid monster imagery.
