Exploring political tension, espionage, and moral conflict across six decades of writing, The Power and the Glory established a distinct blend of atmospheric thrillers and theological drama. English author, playwright, and literary critic Graham Greene produced over twenty-five novels, numerous plays, film screenplays, and short stories that achieved both widespread popularity and critical esteem.

Career & Background

Born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, in 1904, Greene was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1925. He began his professional career in journalism, working as a subeditor for The Times in London from 1926 to 1930, and later serving as a film critic for Night and Day and The Spectator, where he also worked as literary editor from 1940 to 1941. During World War II, Greene served with the Foreign Office in Africa between 1941 and 1944. Over a writing life spanning more than sixty years, he published notable works such as Brighton Rock in 1938 and England Made Me, earning major honors including the 1941 Hawthornden Prize for The Power and the Glory and the 1948 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The Heart of the Matter.

Writing Style & Themes

Greene divided much of his fiction into serious Catholic novels and lighter thrillers or espionage stories that he described as entertainments. His prose frequently addresses complex moral dilemmas, faith, personal betrayals, and political intrigue set against international backdrops. Beyond his fiction, Greene wrote several plays, autobiographical works, travel books, and screenplays, with more than twenty of his works adapted for cinema, including the film noir classic The Third Man. He was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966 and 1967.
