Yume Kitasei's The Deep Sky is an enthralling sci fi thriller debut about a mission into deep space that begins with a lethal explosion that leaves the survivors questioning the loyalty of the crew. They left Earth to save humanity. They’ll have to save themselves first. It is the eve of Earth’s environmental collapse. A single ship carries humanity’s last hope: eighty elite graduates of a competitive program, who will give birth to a generation of children in deep space. But halfway to a distant but livable planet, a lethal bomb kills three of the crew and knocks The Phoenix off course. Asuka, the only surviving witness, is an immediate suspect. As the mystery unfolds on the ship, poignant flashbacks reveal how Asuka came to be picked for the mission. Despite struggling through training back on Earth, she was chosen to represent Japan, a country she only partly knows as a half-Japanese girl raised in America. But estranged from her mother back home, The Phoenix is all she has left. With the crew turning on each other, Asuka is determined to find the culprit before they all lose faith in the mission—or worse, the bomber strikes again.

Speculative fiction spanning deep-space murder mysteries and ocean-crossing ecological quests offers fresh perspectives on identity, environmental collapse, and intercultural existence. Yume Kitasei gained widespread attention with her debut novel The Deep Sky, a post-climate-apocalypse murder mystery set aboard a generation ship bound for a distant planet.
Born on October 14, 1987, in New York City, Kitasei grew up moving between New York and Tokyo. As a Japanese-American writer, she spent her upbringing navigating a space between two distinct cultures, an experience that directly informs the thematic atmosphere of her stories. She graduated from Stuyvesant High School and Princeton University. Prior to releasing her full-length speculative novels, Kitasei published short fiction in outlets including New England Review, Catapult, SmokeLong Quarterly, Baltimore Review, Room Magazine, and The Forge Literary Magazine. Her first work of genre interest, 'Super,' was published in 2019. Kitasei lives in Brooklyn with her two cats, Boondoggle and Filibuster.
Kitasei's speculative narratives combine hard-science fiction premises with intimate character dynamics and sociopolitical commentary. Her writing frequently explores anticolonial themes, environmental salvation, and the friction of living across multiple cultural worlds. In her stories, characters confront ecological crises and complex ethical dilemmas while searching for belonging and ancestral understanding. Rather than relying on standard space-opera tropes, her work emphasizes humanity's emotional and cultural tethers, using speculative settings—from starships to ocean voyages—to examine how survival requires both technological innovation and cultural accountability.
