Her published writing includes well over one hundred short stories alongside non-fiction articles in venues such as McSweeney's, WIRED, The Paris Review, Asimov's, and Tor.com. In addition to prose fiction, she co-created Escapade, a transgender superhero for Marvel Comics, writing her into the New Mutants comic series, and authored the comic book Star Trek: Zero Point for IDW. Anders also serves as a science fiction and fantasy book reviewer for The Washington Post and co-hosts the podcast Our Opinions Are Correct with Annalee Newitz.
Anders's work frequently explores themes of community, explicit queerness, empathy, and the overlap between magic and technology. Her shorter fiction includes the Hugo Award-winning story "Six Months Three Days" and the Sturgeon Award-winning "Don't Press Charges and I Won't Sue," both featured in her collection Even Greater Mistakes. In addition to fiction, her creative writing guide Never Say You Can't Survive offers strategies for using storytelling to navigate difficult life experiences. Across her career, Anders has received major literary honors, including the Hugo, Nebula, Theodore Sturgeon, Lambda Literary, Crawford, and Locus Awards.
