Career & Background
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1968, Díaz immigrated with his family to New Jersey at six years old around 1975. Before establishing his literary career, he worked a variety of labor and service jobs, including positions at a copy shop, as a dishwasher, steelworker, pool-table delivery person, and editorial assistant. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers College (Rutgers University) and later completed a Master of Fine Arts at Cornell University. Shortly after finishing his graduate studies, he published his critically acclaimed debut short story collection, Drown, in 1995.
