Dark academia and speculative fantasy reached new audiences through the viral success of the Atlas trilogy, beginning with the bestseller The Atlas Six. Written by American author Olivie Blake—the pen name of Alexene Farol Follmuth—the series follows six magicians competing for five coveted spots in a secretive society that holds world-altering magical knowledge and power.
Born in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989, Follmuth initially pursued a premed track before attending law school. She shifted her focus toward creative writing after pivoting away from her legal career, initially writing fan fiction online before publishing original work. Her self-published speculative novel The Atlas Six gained widespread viral attention on TikTok, leading to major publishing contracts and New York Times bestseller status. Writing adult fantasy, paranormal fiction, and thrillers under her pen name Olivie Blake, she also publishes young adult fiction under her legal name, including My Mechanical Romance and Twelfth Knight. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband, son, and rescue pit bull.
Blake's speculative fiction frequently explores intricate human relationships, dark academic settings, and supernatural institutions. Her storytelling combines ensemble casts and high-stakes moral dilemmas with character-driven narrative arcs that examine power dynamics, existential questions, and human intimacy. Beyond her dark academia novels, her bibliography spans paranormal stories, literary romance, graphic narratives such as Clara and the Devil (co-created with Little Chmura), and short fiction featured in her collection Januaries.
