§Synopsis

01

When asked to talk to students at Broome Community College in upstate New York in the spring of 2011, Austin Kleon wrote a simple list often things he wished he'd heard when he was their age: 'Steal like an artist; Don't wait until you know who you are to start making things; Write the book you want to read; Use your hands; Side projects are important; Do good work and put it where people can see it; Geography is no longer our master; Be nice (the world is a small town.); Be boring (it's the only way to get work done.); and, Creativity is subtraction.' After giving the speech, he posted the text and slides to his popular blog, where it quickly went viral. Now Kleon has expanded his original manifesto into an illustrated guide to the creative life for writers, artists, entrepreneurs, designers, photographers, musicians, and anyone attempting to make things - art, a career, a life - in the digital age. Brief, direct, and visually interactive, the book includes illustrative anecdotes and mini-exercise sections calling out practical actions readers can take to unleash their own creative spirits.

Practical guides for creative work in the digital age often struggle to balance actionable advice with visual engagement, but concise illustrated handbooks have transformed how modern creators share and sustain their ideas. The widely read handbook Steal Like an Artist reframed artistic influence and creative expression for a contemporary audience, establishing an accessible approach to visual and text-based self-help.

Austin Kleon created these distinctive guides by blending personal illustrations, handwritten notes, found text, and curated advice. His work has reached millions of readers across more than thirty languages, encouraging artists, writers, and professionals to build creative habits and share their progress online.

Career & Background

Born on June 16, 1983, in Circleville, Ohio, Austin Kleon grew up in a rural setting where both of his parents worked in education. His father served as an associate professor at Ohio State University and directed county 4-H programs, while his mother worked as a school guidance counselor and principal. Kleon completed his undergraduate studies at Miami University, developing an interest in combining literary writing with visual art.

Early in his career, Kleon gained attention for his creative experiments with found text. He authored Newspaper Blackout, a poetry collection produced by redacting articles in newspapers using permanent markers. Following this success, he published Steal Like an Artist, which expanded on a popular speech he delivered about creative growth. He went on to release Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered, Keep Going, and The Steal Like an Artist Journal, establishing himself as a prominent voice in contemporary arts education and digital creative culture.

Writing Style & Themes

Austin Kleon describes his creative persona as a writer who draws, integrating hand-drawn illustrations, typography, and collaged quotes directly alongside prose. His handbooks function as visual bricolage, stitching together wisdom from historical figures, found artifacts, and personal studio practice to demystify the artistic process.

Core themes across his writing include the importance of openly sharing work-in-progress, navigating digital distractions, building daily creative routines, and re-evaluating influence. Rather than treating creativity as a secretive endeavor, Kleon emphasizes community engagement, continuous practice, and finding inspiration within everyday environments.
