§Synopsis

01

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow - and horror. As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling - and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Prince Harry wishes to support British charities with donations from his proceeds from Spare. The Duke of Sussex has donated $1,500,000 to Sentebale, an organisation he founded with Prince Seeiso in their mothers' legacies, which supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected by HIV/AIDS. Prince Harry will also donate to the non-profit organisation WellChild in the amount of £300,000. WellChild, which he has been Royal patron of for fifteen years, makes it possible for children and young people with complex health needs to be cared for at home instead of hospital, wherever possible.

§About the Author

Prince Harry

1 books in catalog

Autobiographical royal writing gained significant global attention through the publication of candid personal memoirs detailing life inside modern British royalty. Prince Harry entered the literary landscape with his memoir Spare, providing an unvarnished examination of his upbringing, military career, and transition away from official royal duties.

Career & Background

Born Henry Charles Albert David on September 15, 1984, in London, England, Prince Harry is the younger son of King Charles III and Diana, Princess of Wales. He received his education at Wetherby School, Ludgrove School, and Eton College before entering officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Blues and Royals, he served ten years in the British Armed Forces, completing two active deployments to Afghanistan.

In May 2018, he married American actor Meghan Markle and was granted the title Duke of Sussex; the couple later had two children, Archie and Lilibet. In January 2020, Prince Harry and his wife announced their decision to step back as senior working members of the royal family. They subsequently relocated to North America while Harry retained his position fifth in the line of succession to the British throne.

Writing Style & Themes

Collaborating with ghostwriter J. R. Moehringer, Prince Harry adopted an intimate narrative voice grounded in emotional openness and direct introspection. His prose focuses heavily on personal vulnerability, detailing the psychological impact of losing his mother in 1997 and navigating persistent tabloid invasion throughout his youth and young adulthood.

His literary work explores prominent themes of family trauma, institutional pressures, military brotherhood, and personal rehabilitation. By charting his life from royal prince to combat veteran and independent civilian, his writing addresses broader topics of grief, identity formation, and self-determination outside traditional expectations.

Major Works

  • Spare — Published on January 10, 2023, by Penguin Random House, this 416-page memoir offers a comprehensive account of Prince Harry's life, from his early childhood through his military service and exit from senior royal roles, with proceeds designated for charitable donations.
