§Synopsis

01

Jolene Byrd is a hitmaker—the songwriter who comes up with melodies that fill your heart and get stuck in your head. She should be on top of the world, but she’s burning herself out—fast—and she’s not sure she has another song to give.

When she’s called home for a slap-dash wedding between her brother and her best friend, her parents break the news that in the wake of her mother being unwell, they’ve decided to close The Revelry, her family’s music venue where she grew up. She can’t possibly concentrate on writing when her life is falling apart.

Then a melody comes to her—half-formed and lyric-less—and when she chases after it, she realizes it’s not just a song stuck in her head…but a voice, too. The voice belongs to a frustrated, wry musician—Sasha—who insists he’s on the brink of a comeback if only he can write a hit song.

The only thing Jolene and Sasha can agree on is that they’ll do anything to get out of the other’s head. Including collaborate on a song—the one to get her out of her writer’s block and him his new hit.

As they weave perfect notes together and chart the course of the chorus, the melody takes shape into a something that will change both of their lives forever—if it doesn’t end in heartbreak first.

Blending contemporary romance with subtle elements of magical realism and paranormal fantasy, speculative romance novels have gained wide popularity through stories where love transcends ordinary rules of time and reality. Bestselling author Ashley Poston achieved major success with The Dead Romantics, a novel combining ghost stories, publishing culture, and heartfelt romance, establishing her signature mix of emotional depth and uncanny narrative twists.

Career & Background

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 20, 1985, Poston grew up in the rural South immersed in fanfiction, fantasy, and speculative fiction. She attended the University of South Carolina, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Before writing full-time, she gained broad experience across the book trade, working as a barista, hotelier, clerk, and freelance cover designer before taking a position in the publishing industry designing and implementing marketing strategies for novels. Poston initially built her career in young adult fiction, debuting Geekerella in 2017 and publishing the space opera Heart of Iron in 2018. After writing over half a dozen YA titles, she made a successful transition into adult romance. Today, she writes full-time from her small grey house in South Carolina while dividing her time with New York.

Writing Style & Themes

Poston writes stories centered on love, friendship, and ever afters, frequently incorporating fantasy-adjacent elements into contemporary settings. Heavily influenced by her background reading and writing fanfiction, her adult romances feature high-concept premises—such as a book publicist whose apartment connects her to a roommate living seven years in the past, or a romance writer confronting a literal ghost—without shifting into full high fantasy. Her narrative approach combines humor, pop-culture and fandom homage, and thoughtful explorations of grief, identity, and emotional healing.

Major Works

  • The Dead Romantics — A bestselling romance novel centering on a disillusioned ghostwriter who finds herself communicating with a literal ghost, blending paranormal elements with themes of grief and publishing culture.
  • The Seven Year Slip — A magical-realism romance novel following a book publicist whose apartment temporarily connects her to a man living seven years in the past.
  • A Novel Love Story — An adult romance novel exploring love and storytelling that further established Poston's signature style of contemporary speculative romance.
  • Sounds Like Love — A contemporary romance novel continuing Poston's tradition of high-concept, emotionally resonant romance infused with imaginative twists.
  • Geekerella — First published in 2017, this young adult contemporary novel reimagines the classic Cinderella fairytale within modern fan convention culture.
  • Heart of Iron — A 2018 young adult sci-fi space opera that highlighted Poston's work in speculative young adult fiction prior to her adult romance releases.
