§Synopsis

01

In this Hugo nominated science fiction thriller by Mur Lafferty, a crew of clones awakens aboard a space ship to find they're being hunted-and any one of them could be the killer.

Maria Arena awakens in a cloning vat streaked with drying blood. She has no memory of how she died. This is new; before, when she had awakened as a new clone, her first memory was of how she died.

Maria's vat is one of seven, each one holding the clone of a crew member of the starship Dormire, each clone waiting for its previous incarnation to die so it can awaken. And Maria isn't the only one to die recently. . .

Unlock the bold new science fiction thriller that Corey Doctorow calls Mur's "breakout book".

§About the Author

Combining locked-room murder mysteries with high-concept science fiction and urban fantasy, speculative fiction frequently explores themes of identity, technology, and human survival under extraordinary circumstances. Mur Lafferty gained widespread acclaim with her locked-room clone murder mystery Six Wakes, which received nominations for the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards.

Beyond her standalone science fiction novels, her bibliography spans urban fantasy travel guides, space murder mysteries like Chaos Terminal, superhero satires, and tie-in fiction, alongside pioneering contributions to digital audio publishing.

Career & Background

Born Mary Lafferty on July 25, 1973, in Durham, North Carolina, Lafferty began her career in audio media in 2004, becoming an inaugural inductee into the Podcast Academy's Hall of Fame. She launched the long-running podcast I Should Be Writing to share insights on the craft of writing and later co-hosted the Hugo-nominated podcast Ditch Diggers alongside Matt Wallace. In short fiction and magazine editing, she served as host and co-editor of Pseudopod until July 2007, edited Escape Pod from 2010 to 2012, and acted as editor-in-chief for Mothership Zeta until 2016.

Her transition into professional prose publishing began with early audio distribution of her fiction before traditional print releases. In 2008, her superhero satire novel Playing for Keeps was released in audio, ebook, and print formats. Her early work earned her the 2013 Astounding Award for Best New Writer (formerly the John W. Campbell Award). She subsequently expanded her work into traditional publishing with major speculative novels and tie-in projects, including work within the Star Wars franchise.

Writing Style & Themes

Lafferty's fiction often intersects genre tropes with humor, investigative mysteries, and practical worldbuilding. Her urban fantasy and space opera works frequently feature pragmatic, flawed protagonists navigating complex bureaucracies, paranormal phenomena, or artificial intelligence systems. From afterlife adventures to locked-room mysteries on generation ships, her stories balance tension with witty character interactions and sharp dialogue.

Major Works

  • Six Wakes — Published to critical acclaim, this science fiction novel follows six clones who awake aboard a generation ship with their memories erased and their previous bodies murdered. It was nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, Philip K. Dick, and Manly Wade Wellman Awards.
  • Chaos Terminal — Serving as part of her speculative murder mystery works, this novel continues Lafferty's blend of investigative tropes and science fiction settings across interplanetary environments.
  • The Shambling Guide to New York City — This urban fantasy novel earned the Manly Wade Wellman Award, following a travel writer who unwittingly takes a job creating travel guidebooks for supernatural monsters.
  • Playing for Keeps — Initially produced as a podcast audiobook before its print release in 2008, this novel provides a satirical look at superhero culture from the perspective of third-tier heroes and villains.
