The 1938 philosophical novel Nausea established a key fiction framework for exploring contingency, consciousness, and existential angst through first-person narration. Its author, Jean-Paul Sartre, was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, political activist, biographer, and literary critic who became one of the central figures of twentieth-century French philosophy, existentialism, and Marxism.

Career & Background

Born in Paris on June 21, 1905, Sartre studied at the École Normale Supérieure from 1924 to 1929, where he met fellow student Simone de Beauvoir, who became his lifelong companion and intellectual collaborator. After completing his studies, he accepted a position as a professor of philosophy in Le Havre in 1931. A stipend from the Institut Français enabled him to study in Berlin in 1932, where he focused on the phenomenological philosophies of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. He subsequently taught in Laon and at the Lycée Pasteur in Paris from 1937 until 1939.

Following the Second World War, Sartre left secondary education to live in Paris as an independent writer, journalist, editor, and political theorist. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. However, Sartre attempted to refuse and declined the award, explaining his long-held conviction that a writer should not permit themselves to be turned into an official institution or accept formal honors.

Writing Style & Themes

Sartre's work bridges formal philosophy, dramatic playwriting, literary critique, and narrative fiction. In theoretical treatises like The Transcendence of the Ego and Being and Nothingness, he examined phenomenological concepts of consciousness, human freedom, intentionality, and radical self-determination. His literary works translate these abstract philosophical positions into concrete human situations, analyzing the burdens of choice, existential revulsion, and bad faith.

In addition to his contributions to existentialism, Sartre developed a framework informed by Libertarian Marxism and social theory. Works such as Réflexions sur la question juive addressed prejudice and systemic societal oppression in the post-war period. His writings continue to exert a major influence across fields including sociology, post-colonial theory, critical theory, and literary studies.
