Reality is broken.
At first, it looks like a disease. An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery—and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself.
In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth—and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery . . . and the tools for fighting back.
Together, Barry and Helena will have to confront their enemy—before they, and the world, are trapped in a loop of ever-growing chaos.
Crouch builds a high-concept thriller on a simple, devastating premise: a memory can rewrite your past. Publishers Weekly notes the story is grounded in current neuroscience, though you don't need to follow the physics to keep up. Kirkus finds the emotional core — a love story and a meditation on grief — lifts the book beyond puzzle mechanics. The novel won the 2019 Goodreads Choice Award for Science Fiction, a reader-voted prize, which tells you who's evangelizing it. The opening hits hard: a woman's suicide and the death of the hero's young daughter. That loss drives everything. If you need every piece of the time-travel logic spelled out, this asks you to ride along instead. If you want a fast, twisty ride that hurts, this delivers.
Publishers Weekly called it an intelligent thriller grounded in neuroscience with philosophical depth. Kirkus praised its fast pace, tight plotting, and strong emotional core. Readers voted it the 2019 Goodreads Choice Award winner for Science Fiction.

High-concept science fiction thrillers and intricate mystery plots define a body of work that bridges speculative fiction and screenwriting. Author Blake Crouch gained wide recognition with his speculative novels and screen adaptations that blend quantum physics, temporal manipulation, and psychological suspense.
Born William Blake Crouch on October 15, 1978, in Statesville, North Carolina, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning his degree in 2000. He began publishing novels in 2004 and has since written more than a dozen books translated into over thirty languages, along with short fiction published in Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. Crouch achieved international prominence with his Wayward Pines trilogy, which FOX adapted into a television series executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan that became Summer 2015's top-rated show. Expanding his screenwriting and television work, he co-created the TNT series Good Behavior with Chad Hodge, starring Michelle Dockery and based on his Letty Dobesh novellas. Crouch lives in Colorado with his family, where he writes novels and develops screen projects, including showrunning the television series adaptation of Dark Matter.
Crouch's writing combines fast-paced thriller mechanics with deep explorations of technology, identity, and human consciousness. His speculative narratives frequently center on high-stakes dilemmas involving quantum mechanics, memory alteration, gene editing, and parallel dimensions. By grounding complex scientific concepts in intense personal struggles, his work examines modern digital-age anxieties and the unforeseen consequences of advanced technology.
