Blending high-stakes fantasy trials, political strife, and romantic banter, young adult romantic fantasy has found a major contemporary representative in the Powerless trilogy. Lauren Roberts introduced readers to the kingdom of Ilya in her debut novel Powerless, which rapidly developed a massive international following across social media reading communities and bookshops worldwide.
Career & Background
Raised in Michigan, Lauren Roberts has lived there her entire life, developing a familiarity with potholes, snow, and various lake activities alongside hobbies that span knitting, laser tag, hammocking, word searches, and coloring. As a teenager, she launched a BookTok account at age 16 to share her passion for reading. At age 18, after sharing a snippet written for a college class during a social media live stream, follower enthusiasm encouraged her to draft a full-length fantasy novel. She initially self-published Powerless before the novel was acquired and republished by Simon & Schuster in 2023, expanding into a commercial success with millions of copies sold internationally across dozens of languages.
Writing Style & Themes
When she is not writing about fantasy worlds and bantering love interests, Roberts can usually be found burrowed in bed reading about them or connecting with readers under the handle @LaurenRobertsLibrary on TikTok and Instagram. Her narrative style emphasizes fast-paced action, deadly competitions such as Ilya's Purging Trials, and slow-burn banter between adversarial protagonists. Beyond traditional fantasy tropes, her work focuses on character vulnerability, loyalty, and evolving relationships under intense pressure.
