More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia's teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss -- a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed. The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago ... and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.

High-stakes crime thrillers set in Georgia have reached millions of readers through propulsive police procedurals and intense psychological suspense, most notably in the long-running Will Trent series and bestselling standalone novels. Karin Slaughter established her reputation in modern mystery fiction by blending gritty forensic realism with deep character studies of investigators and survivors. Her books have sold more than 40 million copies in 120 countries, establishing a major presence across print publishing and television adaptations.
Born in Covington, Georgia, on January 6, 1971, Karin Slaughter grew up in Lake Spivey and attended Morrow High School. Before committing to a full-time writing career, she owned and operated a sign business until her mid-twenties. She published her debut crime novel, Blindsighted, in 2001, introducing the rural Georgia setting of the Grant County series. She later launched her Atlanta-based Will Trent series, which evolved into an ABC television drama streaming on Hulu and Disney+. Over her career, Slaughter has written more than twenty-five New York Times bestsellers, including the Edgar Award-nominated standalone novel Cop Town. Beyond her fiction, Slaughter founded the Save the Libraries project, a nonprofit organization established to support public libraries and library programming. She resides in Atlanta.
Slaughter's writing focuses on the harsh realities of crime, law enforcement procedurals, and the lingering psychological impact of trauma on victims and investigators. Set primarily across small-town and metropolitan Georgia, her narratives balance forensic detail with intricate family secrets and institutional corruption. Standalone works such as Pretty Girls and its companion short story Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes illustrate her focus on buried pasts, missing persons, and high-tension narrative pacing. Her books frequently highlight resilient female protagonists and moral dilemmas within the criminal justice system.
