"Ravishingly beautiful." — Joshua Ferris, New York Times
A slender novel of epic power, Orbital deftly snapshots one day in the lives of six women and men traveling through space. Selected for one of the last space station missions of its kind before the program is dismantled, these astronauts and cosmonauts—from America, Russia, Italy, Britain, and Japan—have left their lives behind to travel at a speed of over seventeen thousand miles an hour as the earth reels below. We glimpse moments of their earthly lives through brief communications with family, their photos and talismans; we watch them whip up dehydrated meals, float in gravity-free sleep, and exercise in regimented routines to prevent atrophying muscles; we witness them form bonds that will stand between them and utter solitude. Most of all, we are with them as they behold and record their silent blue planet. Their experiences of sixteen sunrises and sunsets and the bright, blinking constellations of the galaxy are at once breathtakingly awesome and surprisingly intimate.
Profound and contemplative, Orbital is a moving elegy to our environment and planet.

Exploring human experience through contemplative prose that bridges speculative premises and grounded realism, contemporary fiction has found a distinctive voice in narrative accounts of quiet observation and psychological depth. Samantha Harvey is an English author whose novel Orbital won the 2024 Booker Prize by framing human occupation of low Earth orbit through the meticulous lens of realism and philosophical inquiry rather than conventional science fiction. Her published body of work spans five novels and a memoir, drawing recognition across major international literary awards.
Born in Kent in 1975, Harvey has built a body of work recognized for blending precise prose with deep reflections on memory, faith, mortality, and the natural world. Her narrative style frequently examines high-concept settings—ranging from medieval parish life to space stations—with an intimate, character-driven focus.
Samantha Harvey completed her higher education at Bath Spa University and later joined the university's academic faculty as a Reader in Creative Writing, mentoring students on the master's degree program. She published her debut novel, The Wilderness, in 2009, gaining immediate attention in literary circles when the book won the Betty Trask Prize and was longlisted for the Booker Prize. The debut was also shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award, the Orange Prize for Fiction, and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
Following her debut, Harvey expanded her bibliography with the novels All Is Song, Dear Thief, and The Western Wind, alongside a non-fiction memoir titled The Shapeless Unease: A Year of Not Sleeping. Her fifth novel, Orbital, was published in late 2023 and achieved widespread acclaim, culminating in winning the 2024 Booker Prize and the Hawthornden Prize. She lives in Bath, England, where she continues her writing practice alongside her university teaching responsibilities.
Harvey's writing is characterized by lyrical precision, atmospheric patience, and deep engagement with philosophical questions. Drawing on conventions from multiple genres and fields—including literary fiction, science fiction, historical fiction, and philosophy—her books explore how human consciousness copes with isolation, grief, time, and physical environment. Rather than relying on fast-paced action or conventional genre tropes, she approaches complex settings with the careful observational style of a nature writer, placing primary emphasis on emotional reverberations and internal reflection.
