Raised in central North Carolina as a second-generation science fiction fan, Deonn wrote her first short story at age nine—a piece about a girl who could understand animals, which her mother registered with the Library of Congress. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in communication and performance studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before transitioning to full-time fiction writing, Deonn worked across live theater, video game production, and K–12 education. She taught theater to middle school and undergraduate students, as well as creative and academic writing at the university level. In 2019, she served as a featured expert, co-writer, and consulting producer for the SyFy Channel docu-series Looking for Leia, which examined women in Star Wars fandom.
Deonn's writing frequently explores intricate magic systems, grief, identity, and historical memory. Her short fiction and non-fiction have appeared in several anthologies and on Tor.com, including a contribution to the 40th anniversary Star Wars anthology From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. In her novels, Deonn draws upon her background in performance studies and storytelling to build contemporary fantasy settings where modern social realities intersect with ancient magic. Outside of novel writing, Deonn speaks on science fiction and fantasy convention panels, reads comics and fan fiction, and enjoys ginger-flavored foods.
