A thrilling new series from acclaimed fantasy author Jay Kristoff: an assassin must decide on the price of revenge.
Nevernight is a book you judge by its footnotes. An unnamed narrator tells Mia's story and keeps interrupting with worldbuilding asides and jokes. Some readers find that the best thing about it. Others find the longer notes stall the story, and they have a point. Either way, that voice is the whole fever dream: lyrical, profane, funny, violent. It thrives in a Roman-and-Venetian-flavored world where darkness is precious.
The bigger fight is over the assassin school. Think deadly Hogwarts. Some readers find it the engine of the book, while others feel it's a long stopover on the way to the revenge plot. Mia herself is the draw: driven, flawed, and still recognizably human. Expect twists, and expect a teenage heroine in a thoroughly adult novel.
Kirkus called it a hard-to-put-down dark fantasy with a determined, vengeful heroine and a morally ambiguous world. SciFiNow admired its bold break from safe fantasy but found the training overlong and the footnotes disruptive. The voice and world linger; the footnotes and the overlong school stretch are where readers start throwing punches.
