Explorations of speculative concepts, emotional vulnerability, and mortality in young adult literature reached a global audience through the bestselling novel They Both Die in the End. Written by Adam Silvera, this narrative about two young men navigating their final hours after receiving a death notification established a distinct voice in contemporary fiction. The novel experienced a significant second wave of popular acclaim in 2020 through the online BookTok community, confirming its lasting impact on young adult readers.

Beyond standalone contemporary speculative fiction, Adam Silvera expanded his bibliography into urban fantasy with the Infinity Cycle, which includes the novel Infinity Kings, alongside collaborative romantic comedies and emotional contemporary dramas. His work consistently centers young queer protagonists confronting loss, identity, and personal destiny.

Career & Background

Adam Silvera was born on June 7, 1990, and raised in the South Bronx, New York City, by his mother, Persi Rosa, a Puerto Rican social worker. He began writing fiction during his youth by crafting fan fiction for popular series like Harry Potter. Before becoming a full-time author, Silvera worked directly within the publishing industry as a children's bookseller in New York, a marketing assistant at a literary development company, and a book reviewer specializing in children's and young adult titles.

Silvera made his novelistic debut in 2015 with More Happy Than Not, a contemporary story featuring speculative memory-alteration technology that earned starred reviews, hit bestseller lists, and saw him named a Publishers Weekly Flying Start. Following his debut, he published History Is All You Left Me in 2017 before achieving worldwide renown with They Both Die in the End and its companion prequel The First to Die at the End. In addition to his solo endeavors, Silvera partnered with author Becky Albertalli to co-write the young adult romances What If It's Us and Here's to Us.

Writing Style & Themes

Silvera's writing frequently blends relatable real-world settings with speculative elements, ranging from memory modification procedures to near-future death-prediction systems and urban magic. Central to his fiction are themes of grief, trauma, love, and identity, with a strong focus on queer teenagers navigating complex emotional landscapes. His narrative approach prioritizes intense character interiority and moral dilemmas, allowing readers to engage deeply with characters facing high-stakes personal or existential circumstances.

In his fantasy worldbuilding, such as the alternate New York City depicted in Infinity Son and Infinity Kings, Silvera constructs conflicts around power, brotherhood, and magical essence stealing between factions like Spell Walkers and specters. Across genres, his prose balances poignant emotional realism with high-concept premises, drawing on his background as a bookseller and reviewer to connect directly with teen readers seeking authentic representation.
