Magic Bites,

Building expansive worlds filled with monsters, magic, and action, urban fantasy and paranormal romance literature features collaborative fiction co-authored under a single pen name. The pseudonym Ilona Andrews represents the husband-and-wife writing team of Ilona Gordon and Andrew Gordon, best known for their long-running Kate Daniels series and the Hidden Legacy series.

Their shared catalog blends fast-paced action, mythology, and romantic suspense across multiple series, establishing a major presence in modern urban fantasy since their debut novel was published in 2007.

Career & Background

Ilona Gordon was born in the Soviet Union and later moved to the United States, while Andrew Gordon, who goes by Gordon, grew up in Florida and served as a communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to lighthearted rumors, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was not a Russian spy who seduced him. The couple met while attending Western Carolina University in an English Composition 101 class, where Ilona earned a higher grade than Gordon. They eventually married and began writing together, working directly side-by-side on a single computer.

They reside with their two children along with their pets, including dogs and cats, and are represented by literary agent Nancy Yost. Beginning with their 2007 debut novel Magic Bites, the duo developed several bestselling series including the Kate Daniels urban fantasy books, The Edge rustic fantasy series, the Hidden Legacy paranormal romance series, and the Innkeeper Chronicles, which they originally published online as weekly serialized posts.

Writing Style & Themes

The duo's writing focuses on resourceful protagonists navigating dangerous urban and speculative environments stocked with mythological creatures and military-style tactics. Their collaborative process involves planning scenes together and writing seamlessly as a unified voice. Themes in their novels frequently emphasize family loyalty, survival against formidable monsters, complex magic systems, and slow-burn romantic subplots.
