§Synopsis

01

Throughout history, man has been searching for better ways to gather information about his universe. But although they may have longed for it, not even the most brilliant minds could conceive of a device as infinitely powerful or as immeasurably precise as the macroscope, until the twenty-first century. By analyzing information carried on macrons, this unbelievable tool brought the whole universe of wonders to man's doorstep. The macroscope was seen by many as the salvation of the human race. But in the hands of the wrong man, the macroscope could be immensely destructive-infinitely more dangerous than the nuclear bomb. By searching to know too much, man could destroy the very essence of his mind. This is the powerful story of man's struggle with technology, and also the story of his human struggle with himself. This novel takes us across the breathtaking ranges of space as well as through the most touching places in the human heart. It is a story of coming of age, of sacrifice, and of love. It is the story of man's desperate search for a compromise between his mind and his heart, between knowledge and humanity.

§About the Author

Piers Anthony

4 books in catalog

The long-running Xanth fantasy series established a distinctive fictional realm of pun-filled magic, environmental whimsy, and accessible adventure, beginning with A Spell for Chameleon. Piers Anthony built a multi-decade career around this world while simultaneously publishing major science fiction novels like Macroscope and Chthon.

Born in Oxford, England, he relocated to the United States as a child and grew into one of speculative fiction's most prolific writers, producing more than one hundred books across fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, and erotica.

Career & Background

Born Piers Anthony Dillingham Jacob in Oxford, England, he immigrated with his family to the United States when he was four years old. He attended Goddard College in Vermont, graduating in 1956, the same year he met and married his wife, Carol Marble. After working a series of odd jobs, he joined the U.S. Army in 1957 to obtain a steady income and medical insurance. During his military service, he became a U.S. citizen in 1958 and served as an editor and cartoonist for the Battalion newspaper. He left the army in 1959 and briefly taught public school before deciding to pursue writing full-time.

His professional writing career launched in 1963 with the publication of his short story 'Possible to Rue' in Fantastic magazine. He later settled on a tree farm he owned in Florida, maintaining a rigorous daily writing routine that yielded dozens of multi-volume fantasy and science fiction sagas over the next several decades.

Writing Style & Themes

Anthony is widely recognized for high-concept worldbuilding, rigid rule systems governing magic or technology, and an extensive reliance on wordplay and reader-submitted puns. His fantasy narratives often personify abstract concepts such as death, time, and fate into relatable characters, blending humorous situations with structured allegorical quests.

Beyond his broad lighthearted fantasy output, his bibliography reflects a willingness to experiment with darker psychological tones, satire, and subverted genre tropes. Works like Pornucopia highlight his exploration of adult fantasy themes, demonstrating a stylistic range that contrasts with his juvenile and young adult fantasy series.

Major Works

  • A Spell for Chameleon — Published in 1977 as the debut novel of the Xanth series, this story introduces a magical continent where every inhabitant possesses a unique talent. It won the British Fantasy Award and established the worldbuilding style for the long-running franchise.

  • Macroscope — Released in 1969, this Hugo Award-nominated science fiction novel examines deep space exploration, astrology, and human perception through a device capable of viewing all spacetime.
  • Pornucopia — Published in 1989, this novel represents Anthony's foray into satirical erotic fantasy, exploring adult humor and subverting traditional fantasy tropes.
