Light From Uncommon Stars, a defiantly joyful adventure set in California's San Gabriel Valley, with cursed violins, Faustian bargains, and queer alien courtship over fresh-made donuts.
Shizuka Satomi made a deal with the devil: to escape damnation, she must entice seven other violin prodigies to trade their souls for success. She has already delivered six.
When Katrina Nguyen, a young transgender runaway, catches Shizuka's ear with her wild talent, Shizuka can almost feel the curse lifting. She's found her final candidate.
But in a donut shop off a bustling highway in the San Gabriel Valley, Shizuka meets Lan Tran, retired starship captain, interstellar refugee, and mother of four. Shizuka doesn't have time for crushes or coffee dates, what with her very soul on the line, but Lan's kind smile and eyes like stars might just redefine a soul's worth. And maybe something as small as a warm donut is powerful enough to break a curse as vast as the California coastline.
As the lives of these three women become entangled by chance and fate, a story of magic, identity, curses, and hope begins, and a family worth crossing the universe for is found.

Blending speculative fiction with culinary heritage, classical music, and transgender experience, the award-winning novel Light from Uncommon Stars introduced a distinctive voice to modern science fiction and fantasy. American author Ryka Aoki crafts stories where otherworldly elements—such as cursed violins, spacefaring refugees, and demonic bargains—intersect with the intimate, grounded realities of everyday community life in Southern California.
Beyond her celebrated speculative prose, Aoki is an accomplished poet, musician, composer, and educator whose work spans multiple literary forms. Her writing frequently explores themes of identity, belonging, resilience, and human connection, earning critical acclaim across both speculative and queer literary communities.
Raised in Southern California's San Gabriel Valley by Japanese American parents, Aoki was a first-generation college graduate who initially studied chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, before pursuing creative writing. She went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts from Cornell University. Over her academic career, she has served as a professor of English at Santa Monica College and taught gender studies at Antioch University.
In addition to her university teaching, Aoki has engaged extensively in community arts mentorship, including running The After School collaborative workspace for queer writers and writers of color at Beyond Baroque in Venice, California. She has also worked with organizations such as the American Association of Hiroshima Nagasaki Atom Bomb Survivors. Aoki's civic and artistic contributions have been recognized by the California State Senate for extraordinary commitment to the visibility and well-being of transgender people, and she was awarded the Jim Duggins PhD Outstanding Mid-Career Novelist Prize by Lambda Literary.
Aoki's literary style bridges speculative imagination with empathetic, character-driven realism. Whether writing novels, poetry, or personal essays, she focuses on themes of empathy, culinary culture, artistic devotion, vulnerability, and intergenerational connection. Her narratives frequently examine how marginalized individuals construct sanctuary and chosen family amid hardship, employing elements like alien technology or folklore to illuminate authentic emotional struggles.
In her personal reflections, Aoki has shared that her drive to write stems from a desire to listen to people, share stories, and build bridges across isolating life experiences. This creative philosophy manifests in her prose through attentive interpersonal dynamics, rich sensory depictions of regional settings, and an underlying commitment to mutual support and healing.
