Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, Nobel Prize–nominated grudge holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.
Like science, though, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Eizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother but also the reluctant star of America's most beloved cooking show, Supper at Six. Elizabeth's unusual approach to cooking ("combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride") proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because, as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn't just teaching women how to cook. She's daring them to change the status quo.

The debut novel Lessons in Chemistry introduced readers to Elizabeth Zott, a 1960s chemist who unexpectedly becomes the host of a television cooking show that encourages women to challenge societal expectations. American author Bonnie Garmus published the bestseller after decades of working in commercial writing, creating a character whose scientific approach to life resonated widely with readers across the globe.
Born in Riverside, California, Bonnie Jean Garmus earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in creative writing and aesthetic studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Before making her fiction debut, she spent decades working as a copywriter and creative director in fields ranging from technology and medicine to education. Her career in commercial writing took her to various locations, including Colombia and Switzerland, alongside time spent in Seattle. Before publishing her first novel, Garmus completed an earlier manuscript that received 98 rejections, leading her to set it aside and begin a new project.
Published in April 2022, Lessons in Chemistry rapidly became an international success, staying on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly two years and receiving translations into more than 40 languages. The novel was selected for the Good Morning America Book Club, earned a Goodreads Choice Best Book of the Year award, and was adapted into an Apple TV+ television series starring Brie Larson. Beyond writing, Garmus is an avid open-water swimmer and rower. She is the mother of two daughters and currently resides outside London with her husband and her dog, 99.
Garmus approaches her fiction writing without a rigid outline, describing her creative process as assembling a jigsaw puzzle with many upside-down pieces. Her work often addresses themes of female agency, institutional bias, and scientific rationale, drawing on constructive frustration with workplace inequities. Her narrative voice balances sharp humor with poignant observations, grounding her storytelling in memorable characters who resist mid-twentieth-century gender expectations.
