Know My Name,

Memoirs of personal survival and institutional justice rarely reshape public discourse as profoundly as Know My Name, a book that redefined survivor narratives in modern American literature. Written by author and artist Chanel Miller, this acclaimed memoir emerged from her experiences navigating the criminal justice system under the anonymous pseudonym Emily Doe following a sexual assault at Stanford University. By claiming her identity and sharing her story, Miller transformed a widely circulated victim impact statement into a comprehensive literary work that addresses trauma, healing, and personal agency.

Career & Background

Chanel Miller was born on June 12, 1992, and raised in California, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She first entered public awareness anonymously as Emily Doe in People v. Turner after being sexually assaulted on the Stanford University campus in January 2015. In 2016, her victim impact statement was published online by BuzzFeed, attracting more than 11 million reads within four days and earning her recognition as a Glamour Woman of the Year. In September 2019, Miller relinquished her anonymity to publish Know My Name, which quickly became an instant New York Times bestseller, a New York Times Book Review Notable Book, and won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, the Ridenhour Book Prize, and the California Book Award. The memoir was recognized as a best book of the year by outlets including Time, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, NPR, and People, leading to Miller's inclusion on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list and the Time Next 100 list. Building on her lifelong passion for writing and illustrating children's books that began in elementary school, she later expanded her literary output to middle-grade fiction with Magnolia Wu Unfolds It All.

Writing Style & Themes

Miller's creative work spans literary nonfiction, visual illustration, ceramics, and middle-grade fiction. Her prose in Know My Name combines rigorous emotional honesty with sharp commentary on judicial processes, using clear, precise language to articulate complex trauma and self-reclamation. In addition to her writing, Miller's artistic background includes formal cartooning and comedic storytelling, elements that inform both her visual art and her illustrated narrative style. Her transition into children's literature with Magnolia Wu Unfolds It All reflects her enduring interest in visual storytelling, pairing her distinct illustrations with gentle, character-driven narratives centered on childhood curiosity, community, and friendship.
