§Synopsis

01

It's never safe to go back in the water..

tt was just another day in the life of a small Atlantic resort until the terror from the deep came to prey on unwary holiday makers. The first sign of trouble — a waming ot what was to come — took the form of a young woman's body, or what was left of it, washed up on the long white stretch of beach.

A summer of horror had begun.

First published in 1974, Jaws represented a terrifying high point of the disaster genre. It has sold over twenty million copies worldwide and given us a legend that refuses to die. --back cover

Maritime thrillers exploring the perils of the ocean depths and humanity's fraught relationship with marine life redefined popular suspense fiction in the late twentieth century. Author Peter Benchley gained international prominence with his 1974 debut novel Jaws, a tense narrative centered on a man-eating great white shark terrorizing a New England beach town. The book became a massive commercial bestseller and was subsequently adapted into a blockbuster film for which Benchley co-wrote the screenplay.

Career & Background

Born in New York City on May 8, 1940, Peter Bradford Benchley came from a literary family as the son of author Nathaniel Benchley and the grandson of humorist Robert Benchley. He spent summers on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, where observing sharks in coastal waters fostered a lifelong interest in marine environments. Benchley studied at Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1961. Before establishing himself as a novelist, he worked as a reporter for The Washington Post in 1963, an associate editor at Newsweek from 1963 to 1967, and a speechwriter and White House staff assistant for President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Benchley published early non-fiction and juvenile works, including Time and a Ticket and Jonathan Visits the White House in 1964, prior to his commercial breakthrough with Jaws in 1974. The success of Jaws enabled him to write fiction and screenplays full-time. Many of his subsequent ocean-themed novels were adapted for cinema and television, including The Deep, The Island, Beast, and White Shark. In his later years, Benchley became an active advocate for ocean conservation and shark protection. He lived in Princeton, New Jersey, until his death from pulmonary fibrosis on February 11, 2006.

Writing Style & Themes

Benchley's writing combines journalistic detail with high-stakes narrative tension, drawing on extensive research into marine biology, oceanography, and deep-sea diving. His plots frequently center on coastal communities or maritime expeditions confronted by dangerous aquatic predators and unpredictable marine elements. Recurring themes in his work include the conflict between commercial development and nature, the mysteries of deep ocean waters, and human vulnerability in wild aquatic environments.

Major Works

  • Jaws — Published in 1974, this novel depicts a seaside town threatened by a great white shark. Benchley co-wrote the screenplay for its landmark cinematic adaptation.
