How to Take Smart Notes: One Simple Technique to Boost Writing, Learning and Thinking,
by Sönke Ahrens
by Sönke Ahrens
An informational book that describes and advocates for the note taking system of the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann. The author's primary claim is that Luhmann's system of keeping a slip-box (or "zettelkasten") full of interesting ideas and bibliographic references can help students, academics, and non-fiction writers be more productive.

Modern knowledge work and academic productivity rely heavily on systems that turn reading and research into structured, creative output. Sönke Ahrens bridged the gap between historical scholarship methods and modern note-taking workflows with his widely acclaimed guide How to Take Smart Notes: One Simple Technique to Boost Writing, Learning and Thinking. First self-published in 2017 and released in a revised second edition in 2022, the book demystifies the Zettelkasten—or slip-box—method for students, academics, and non-fiction writers globally.
By framing note-taking as an active, interconnected process rather than passive storage, Ahrens transformed how readers approach learning, writing, and idea generation. His work has sold over 100,000 copies and been translated into multiple languages, popularizing a systematic framework for long-term intellectual organization.
Dr. Sönke Ahrens earned his doctorate in education and built a career in academia before expanding into independent research and systemic consulting. Based in Hamburg, Germany, he taught the philosophy of education at several higher education institutions, including the University of Hamburg, the University of Fribourg, and the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich. His academic writing includes his 2010 volume Experiment und Exploration: Bildung als experimentelle Form der Welterschließung, published by transcript Verlag.
Beyond his university appointments, Ahrens operates as an independent researcher, systemic coach, and consultant. He regularly conducts workshops, lectures, and interviews discussing knowledge management, learning, and systemic thinking. Following the global success of his publication on note-taking, he developed practical instructional courses to help professionals implement slip-box principles into modern digital environments like Obsidian and Roam Research.
Ahrens's writing connects academic theory with actionable, real-world methodology. A core theme across his work is the practical impact of everyday beliefs about thinking, memory, and productivity. Rather than treating writing as the final stage of research, Ahrens emphasizes that writing and thinking are mutually dependent, continuous processes facilitated by externalized systems.
His central conceptual focus is the adaptation of classic slip-box methods for contemporary digital and analog workflows. Ahrens critiques traditional, linear study habits and demonstrates how bottom-up note-taking allows ideas to cluster naturally over time. By detailing how atomic notes generate unexpected connections, his work focuses on reducing cognitive load, preventing writer's block, and building sustainable intellectual habits.
