'It is absolutely brilliant, I think every woman should read it' PANDORA SYKES, THE HIGH LOW 'My wish is that every white woman who calls herself a feminist will read this book in a state of hushed and humble respect ... Essential reading' ELIZABETH GILBERT All too often the focus of mainstream feminism is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Meeting basic needs is a feminist issue. Food insecurity, the living wage and access to education are feminist issues. The fight against racism, ableism and transmisogyny are all feminist issues. White feminists often fail to see how race, class, sexual orientation and disability intersect with gender. How can feminists stand in solidarity as a movement when there is a distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others? Insightful, incendiary and ultimately hopeful, Hood Feminism is both an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux and also clear-eyed assessment of how to save it.

Critical examinations of modern social movements often highlight how mainstream discourse overlooks fundamental human needs such as food security, housing, and bodily autonomy. Mikki Kendall brought these essential issues to the forefront of cultural criticism through her New York Times-bestselling essay collection Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot, establishing a vital critique of how modern feminist movements frequently fail marginalized communities.
Born on October 23, 1976, and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, Kendall developed a critical perspective on cultural representation, race, and community politics. She earned degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and DePaul University, building an academic and research foundation that informed her public commentary. Over her career as an author, cultural critic, speaker, and diversity consultant, she has contributed essays and reporting to national and international publications, including The Guardian, The Washington Post, TIME, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Ebony, Essence, and Salon.
Kendall transitioned into book-length work in 2019 with the release of Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists: A Graphic History of Women's Fight for Their Rights, an illustrated narrative created with artist A. D'Amico and published by Penguin Random House. She followed this in February 2020 with Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot, published by Viking Books. The essay collection became a New York Times and IndieBound bestseller, won the Chicago Review of Books Award, and was selected as a must-read book of the year by outlets such as TIME, BBC, and Bustle. Kendall has also contributed to comic anthologies like DC Comics' Wonder Women of History and has frequently appeared as a commentator on platforms including NPR, BBC, The Daily Show, MSNBC, Al Jazeera, PBS, and WBEZ.
Kendall's writing style is characterized by direct prose, personal reflection, and rigorous critique of institutional inequities. Rather than treating political philosophy as an abstract academic exercise, her work centers everyday survival issues—such as food insecurity, housing stability, safety from police brutality, and healthcare access—as core feminist concerns. By challenging hyper-visible mainstream feminist discourse, she argues that true equity cannot be achieved without addressing the material conditions affecting low-income women and women of color.
Across essays, graphic works, and cultural commentary, Kendall regularly explores media representation, pop culture, public safety, and the history of civil rights movements. Her approach combines accessible storytelling with sharp analysis of systemic power structures, making complex sociopolitical topics approachable for broad audiences while maintaining an unyielding commitment to marginalized perspectives.
