Heartstopper: Volume One,

Acclaimed for realistic portrayals of UK teenage life, mental health, and LGBTQIA+ experiences, the graphic novel series Heartstopper has become a defining contemporary young adult romance. Alice Oseman, an English author, illustrator, and screenwriter born in Kent in 1994, created the original webcomic before expanding her story universe across graphic novels, prose fiction, and television adaptations.

Career & Background

Oseman secured her first publishing deal at age 17 and published her debut novel, Solitaire, in 2014 when she was 19. While studying at Durham University, she published her second novel, Radio Silence, followed by the young adult contemporary titles I Was Born for This and Loveless, which became a New York Times bestseller. Alongside her prose, Oseman created the LGBTQ+ YA romance webcomic Heartstopper, which was subsequently published in physical graphic novel form by Hachette Children's Group. The graphic novel series includes titles such as Heartstopper: Volume One and Heartstopper: Volume Six. Beyond her printed works, Oseman served as the writer, creator, and executive producer for the Emmy Award-winning Netflix television adaptation produced by See-Saw Films, writing every episode and remaining involved at every stage from casting to music selection.

Her body of work has earned major critical and industry recognition. Oseman's honors include the British Book Awards Illustrator of the Year, three Children's and Family Emmy Awards, three Goodreads Choice Awards, and a Silver Inky Award, alongside nominations and shortlistings for the YA Book Prize and the Carnegie Medal. She was named Attitude Person of the Year 2023 and was selected for the BBC's 100 Women list in November 2023 and Time's Time100 Next list in October 2024.

Writing Style & Themes

Oseman's storytelling centers on contemporary UK youth culture, focusing on teenage disasters, emotional conversations in the rain, and quiet moments of self-discovery. Her work is widely recognized for its nuanced exploration of asexual and aromantic spectrum identities, mental health challenges, and deep queer friendships. Combining expressive illustrative techniques with candid prose, her stories depict adolescence where platonic bonds, romantic relationships, and individual growth carry equal weight.
