While still a twenty-year-old junior at Bennington, he published his debut novel, Less Than Zero, after selling the manuscript to Simon & Schuster for five thousand dollars. Emerging in the 1980s alongside a group of young authors dubbed the Literary Brat Pack, Ellis established himself as both a novelist and screenwriter. Over his career, his writings have been translated into twenty-seven languages, and he has contributed articles to periodicals such as Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The Wall Street Journal, and Interview magazine.
In addition to his prose and screenwriting, Ellis expanded into audio broadcasting and documentary work. He appeared in the 2000 documentary film This Is Not an Exit: The Fictional World of Bret Easton Ellis. In 2013, he launched The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast with PodcastOne Studios before transitioning the program to Patreon in 2018. Through his podcast, he has interviewed prominent public figures including Quentin Tarantino, Kanye West, Marilyn Manson, and Billy Corgan. He currently resides in Los Angeles, continuing to publish long-form fiction, nonfiction, and commentary.
