Flash Boys,

Investigative narrative nonfiction examining complex financial markets, behavioral economics, and institutional systems has been shaped significantly by books like Moneyball. American author and long-form journalist Michael Lewis, born October 15, 1960, in New Orleans, Louisiana, translates arcane technical subjects into character-driven prose that exposes structural flaws and human motivations within major American institutions.

Career & Background

Lewis was born to J. Thomas Lewis, a corporate attorney, and Diana Lewis in New Orleans. He attended Princeton University, earning a degree in art history, before completing a master's degree in economics at the London School of Economics. His early professional career took him to Wall Street as a bond salesman at Salomon Brothers during the late 1980s. This firsthand experience inside high finance provided the raw material for his debut book, Liar’s Poker, published in 1989. Following the success of his debut, he transitioned into full-time journalism and authorship, becoming a long-time contributing editor to Vanity Fair since 2009, writing on business, finance, and economics while residing in Berkeley, California with his family.

Writing Style & Themes

Throughout his career, Lewis has focused on insider perspectives, exploring how individuals navigate or challenge established institutions. Whether detailing the statistical revolution in professional baseball with Moneyball, analyzing the blind spots surrounding the 2008 financial crisis in The Big Short, or investigating high-frequency trading in Flash Boys, his writing renders dense economic mechanisms accessible and human. His work consistently highlights unconventional thinkers who identify overlooked systemic risks or structural inefficiencies.
