Empire of the Sun,

Post-apocalyptic fiction and psychological satire reshaped speculative literature through vivid depictions of human psychology, technological change, and social breakdown, most notably in The Drowned World. Novelist and short-story writer J. G. Ballard became a prominent figure in New Wave science fiction by exploring how modern environments, mass media, and technology alter human consciousness.

Career & Background

James Graham Ballard was born in 1930 and raised in the International Settlement in Shanghai, China, where his father worked as a chemist and businessman. In 1943, during World War II, the Japanese occupied the International Settlement, and Ballard's family was sent to the Lunghua Civilian Assembly Center, where they were interned for two years until the end of the war. In 1946, Ballard went to England with his mother and sister, and he stayed on in England after his mother and sister returned to China to rejoin his father. He entered King's College, Cambridge in 1949 to study medicine, but he began writing fiction and abandoned his medical studies in 1952 to pursue writing.

After working as a copywriter and a porter in Covent Garden, Ballard joined the Royal Air Force in 1953 and was sent to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, for flight training. During his service in Canada, he discovered American science fiction magazines and began writing speculative stories. He left the RAF in 1954 and returned to England, taking jobs on technical and scientific journals. In 1956, his first science fiction short story was published in New Worlds, and in 1960, he committed to writing fiction full-time.

Writing Style & Themes

Ballard's fiction frequently examines post-apocalyptic settings, surreal landscapes, industrial decay, and the psychological impact of technological advancement. His works explore the boundaries between human desire, consumer culture, sex, and mass media, depicting characters whose internal psychological states mirror their alienating physical surroundings. Rather than focusing on conventional space exploration, his narrative approach prioritizes inner space, analyzing how humanity responds to climate cataclysms, urban isolation, and technological fetishism.
