Elbow Room,

"Elbow Room," which tells the story of an interracial couple and the challenges they encounter due to societal prejudices. The narrator, who is a friend of the couple, reflects on the difficulties of being an interracial couple and the reactions from their families, particularly the white husband's father who rejects the marriage.

The collection includes other stories such as "Why I Like Country Music," which explores the cultural differences between the North and South through the lens of a married couple's differing views on square dancing.

Another story, "The Story of a Dead Man," delves into themes of family loyalty and the consequences of dishonesty.

Throughout the collection, McPherson uses a blend of humor, social commentary, and philosophical introspection to address the themes of identity, race, and the search for personal freedom.

The title "Elbow Room" itself refers to the metaphorical space individuals have to navigate their lives within the constraints of societal expectations and racial divisions.
