§Synopsis

01

Menolly needs more than music’s power to make it as a Harper in the second book in the Harper Hall trilogy, set within science fiction legend Anne McCaffrey’s beloved and bestselling Dragonriders of Pern series.

In the world of Pern, Harpers are more powerful than kings, for the music they play can control the minds of others. For young Menolly, her dreams of becoming a Harper have nothing to do with power, but rather her love of music. Now she is finally living out her musical dreams as an apprentice Harper, but it’s turning out to be more challenging than she thought. Formerly forbidden to study music because of her gender, Menolly quickly encounters hostility from a number of her male peers and masters.

With the help of new friends, teachers, and her nine tiny, colorful dragons, Menolly finds that her musical talents may be stronger than anyone could imagine.

The blending of science fiction and planetary romance reached groundbreaking acclaim with the Dragonriders of Pern series, a science-fiction saga featuring telepathic dragons protecting the world of Pern from deadly spores. Anne Inez McCaffrey created this universe, starting with short stories that earned major awards in speculative fiction. She became the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction with her novella Weyr Search in 1968, and the first woman to win a Nebula Award for Best Novella with Dragonrider in 1969. In 1978, her novel The White Dragon became one of the first science-fiction books to appear on the New York Times Best Seller list.

Career & Background

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on April 1, 1926, Anne McCaffrey studied Slavonic languages and literature at Radcliffe College, graduating in 1947. Before committing full-time to writing, she trained as an actress and opera singer. Her early fiction was published in Science Fiction + Magazine, followed by her debut novel Restoree in 1967. After establishing her writing career, she relocated to County Wicklow, Ireland, where she resided at her home, Dragonhold-Underhill. Over her decades-long career, her achievements were recognized with major industry honors: the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named her its 22nd Grand Master in 2005, she was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame on 17 June 2006, and she received the Robert A. Heinlein Award in 2007.

Writing Style & Themes

McCaffrey's writing often bridged science fiction and fantasy tropes, presenting dragon-like creatures as biologically engineered organisms on a distant planet colonist world rather than magical beasts. Her narrative focus frequently centered on strong female protagonists, deep emotional and telepathic bonds between humans and animals, and resilient communities collaborating against environmental disasters. Beyond her dragon stories, her work explored cyborg integration and human consciousness in works such as The Ship Who Sang.
