The debut novel of an astonishing voice in psychological suspense As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox—his partner and closest friend—find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past. Richly atmospheric, stunning in its complexity, and utterly convincing and surprising to the end, In the Woods is sure to enthrall fans of Mystic River and The Lovely Bones.

Combining psychological depth with procedural detail, modern Irish mystery fiction found a defining voice in the late 2000s through police procedurals that prioritize character memory and emotional trauma over neat resolution. Novelist and theatrical actress Tana French established her reputation with the 2007 debut novel In the Woods, which launched her Dublin Murder Squad series and earned major mystery accolades across the United States and Ireland. Born in Burlington, Vermont, French eventually settled in Dublin, where her background in drama informed her immersive, character-driven approach to crime writing.
Her acclaimed body of work spans both interconnecting police procedurals and standalone suspense novels, selling millions of copies worldwide. Publications such as The Independent have dubbed French the "First Lady of Irish Crime" due to her atmospheric depictions of contemporary Ireland and complex character studies.
Tana Elizabeth French was born on May 10, 1973, in Burlington, Vermont, and spent her childhood living in various countries, including Ireland, Italy, Malawi, and the United States. She attended Trinity College Dublin, where she trained in acting, a discipline that later shaped her keen eye for voice, dialogue, and character performance. Working as a theatrical actress in Dublin provided her with deep artistic roots in Ireland, where she chose to make her permanent home with her family.
French made her literary debut in 2007 with In the Woods, which won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, and Barry awards for Best First Novel, alongside the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Best Mystery/Thriller. She followed this success with subsequent installments in the Dublin Murder Squad sequence, including The Likeness, Faithful Place, Broken Harbour, The Secret Place, and The Trespasser. Beyond the squad series, French expanded her focus to standalone psychological thrillers such as The Wych Elm and rural mystery novels including The Searcher and its sequel The Hunter.
French is widely recognized for subverting traditional police procedural tropes by centering stories on the psychological vulnerabilities and unreliability of her narrators. Rather than offering neat conclusions to criminal investigations, her narratives frequently focus on how unsolved trauma, hidden memories, and shifting social dynamics disrupt the lives of investigators and suspects alike.
Her background in theatre strongly influences her narrative technique, resulting in highly distinct first-person narrative voices and meticulously paced dialogue. Recurring themes across her novels include class tension in changing Irish communities, the weight of past decisions, the fragility of friendship, and the subjective nature of truth in criminal investigations.
