For fans of Never Let Me Go and My Dark Vanessa, a powerful, provocative novel about the relationship between a female robot and her human owner, exploring questions of intimacy, power, autonomy, and control.
Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the pert outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.
She’s learning, too.
Doug says he loves that Annie’s AI makes her seem more like a real woman, so Annie explores human traits such as curiosity, secrecy, and longing. But becoming more human also means becoming less perfect, and as Annie’s relationship with Doug grows more intricate and difficult, she starts to wonder: Does Doug really desire what he says he wants? And in such an impossible paradox, what does Annie owe herself?

Exploring the psychological and emotional boundaries between human intimacy and artificial intelligence, speculative fiction has increasingly turned toward human-robot relationship dynamics. Author Sierra Greer entered the field with her debut novel Annie Bot, a provocative exploration of autonomy, gender dynamics, and personhood through the perspective of an AI companion. The novel examines what happens when a companion robot engineered to accommodate her male owner's desires begins to develop genuine self-awareness and agency.
Released to critical acclaim, Annie Bot established Greer as a compelling voice in contemporary science fiction, earning accolades including selection as a Book of the Month pick and recognition as the 2025 Arthur C. Clarke Award winner.
Sierra Greer grew up in Minnesota before earning degrees from Williams College and Johns Hopkins University. Prior to publishing fiction under the name Sierra Greer, she worked as a high school English teacher. Greer chose to write under a pen name for her adult speculative work—she is also known as author Caragh M. O'Brien. Published in March 2024, her debut novel Annie Bot quickly gained widespread attention, including a feature on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as part of its Fallon Book Club bracket. She currently writes about the future from her home in rural Connecticut.
Greer's writing delves into complex social and philosophical questions surrounding patriarchy, domestic power structures, race, and feminism within near-future speculative settings. Through intimate character studies, her work interrogates the ethical implications of creating sentient beings designed for male gratification. By adopting the internal viewpoint of an artificial entity, Greer presents a nuanced critique of traditional gender roles and human expectations of compliance, tracing the subtle and challenging path toward true independence.
