Satirical fiction depicting urban alienation, suburban youth subcultures, and wealthy late-twentieth-century society forms a central pillar of modern fiction. The American novelist Bret Easton Ellis made his literary mark with shocking, minimalist narratives that examine privilege, consumerism, and psychological detachment.
Born on March 7, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, Ellis grew up in the San Fernando Valley and attended the private Buckley School. He pursued higher education at Bennington College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1986. While still a twenty-year-old junior at Bennington, he published his debut novel, Less Than Zero, after selling the manuscript to Simon & Schuster for five thousand dollars. Emerging in the 1980s alongside a group of young authors dubbed the Literary Brat Pack, Ellis established himself as both a novelist and screenwriter. Over his career, his writings have been translated into twenty-seven languages, and he has contributed articles to periodicals such as Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The Wall Street Journal, and Interview magazine.
In addition to his prose and screenwriting, Ellis expanded into audio broadcasting and documentary work. He appeared in the 2000 documentary film This Is Not an Exit: The Fictional World of Bret Easton Ellis. In 2013, he launched The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast with PodcastOne Studios before transitioning the program to Patreon in 2018. Through his podcast, he has interviewed prominent public figures including Quentin Tarantino, Kanye West, Marilyn Manson, and Billy Corgan. He currently resides in Los Angeles, continuing to publish long-form fiction, nonfiction, and commentary.
As a self-proclaimed satirist, Ellis employs an affectless, minimalist prose style characterized by deadpan descriptions of extreme behaviors, consumer obsessions, and moral apathy. His novels frequently feature recurring characters across different narratives, creating an interconnected fictional world centered on affluent figures in Los Angeles and New York. Themes of extreme wealth, celebrity obsession, identity fragmentation, serial violence, and the loss of youthful innocence run consistently through his work.
