Alter Ego,

Blending futuristic science fiction, fantasy, and classic folklore, speculative young adult fiction gained a fresh dimension through creative retellings of iconic fairy tales. American novelist Marissa Meyer rose to prominence with her debut novel Cinder in 2012, launching The Lunar Chronicles, a bestselling series that reimagined classic fairy-tale heroines within a high-stakes sci-fi universe.

Career & Background

Born on February 19, 1984, in Tacoma, Washington, Meyer developed a passion for storytelling early in childhood, writing plays, poems, and short stories before discovering fan fiction during her teenage years. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in creative writing from Pacific Lutheran University and subsequently worked as a book editor in Seattle. Represented by literary agent Jill Grinberg, she transitioned to full-time writing following the success of The Lunar Chronicles, which encompasses Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress.

In addition to her fiction career, Meyer hosted more than two hundred episodes of the motivational podcast The Happy Writer, interviewing authors, editors, and publishing industry insiders. This initiative inspired her nonfiction craft book The Happy Writer: Get More Ideas, Write More Words, and Find More Joy from First Draft to Publication and Beyond. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband, Jess, their twin daughters, and three cats.

Writing Style & Themes

Meyer's bibliography spans sci-fi fantasy, superhero sagas, graphic novels, and romance, characterized by morally complex characters, secret identities, and intricate world-building. A fan of geek culture, costume events, Sailor Moon, and Firefly, her work frequently explores themes of heroism, redemption, and agency across reinvented classic mythologies.
