Psychological guidance on identifying and healing from the lingering effects of growing up with self-involved or distant caregivers forms the centerpiece of clinical literature on family dynamics. Dr. Lindsay C. Gibson, a clinical psychologist, brought this domain into widespread public awareness through her landmark book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, which examines how parental emotional limitations shape adult relationships and self-worth.
Her work provides an actionable framework for readers striving to set boundaries and reclaim personal autonomy, complemented by practical companion materials such as the Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents Guided Journal: Your Space to Heal, Reflect, and Reconnect with Your True Self.
Dr. Gibson earned a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from Central Michigan University and a Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) from the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology. She has accumulated more than thirty years of professional experience as a practicing clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, working across both public service and private practice in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In addition to her private practice, she previously served as an adjunct assistant professor, instructing doctoral clinical psychology students in clinical theory and psychotherapy techniques.
Gibson's therapeutic and writing approach focuses on adult personal growth, emotional intimacy, and psychological self-awareness. In her foundational analysis of parental emotional immaturity, she categorizes emotionally immature parents into distinct types, including driven parents who attempt to perfect those around them, passive parents who avoid conflict at all costs, and rejecting parents who withhold affection and connection. Her books translate complex psychotherapeutic principles into accessible reflection prompts and coping tools, emphasizing boundary setting and emotional independence. Her published works have reached an international readership, selling over one million copies and appearing in thirty-seven languages.
